AJ (Andrew) Bowen, Bellevue West Class of 2000

Q: What was your most memorable experience in high school?

A: Senior Year Marching Contest at St. Louis. It was our first trip to a Bands of America Competition. All of the preparations to play in a dome were a blast. I had a solo at the beginning of the show, and I can remember the sounds of that solo echoing around the dome. It was a very special experience..

Q: Tell us about a teacher, coach, or staff member who significantly impacted you

A: I really enjoyed working with all of my teachers, but my music teachers Byron Braasch and Don Reimer changed my life. I now teach music and as I think back on my experiences in high school, I strive to give my students experiences that they can take and prepare them for the rest of their lives.

Q: What activities, clubs, or sports were you involved in during high school, and how did they influence your path after graduation?

A: I was involved in Band, Choir, Theatre and National Honor Society. I now teach Band, but I have taught all levels of music. I even started the theatre club at Wake Robin Elementary.

Q: What do you do for a living?

A: I started teaching music right out of college. I moved back to Bellevue in 2005 and have taught all levels of music from Kindergarten to High School. I really enjoy the challenges of helping students find their "voice" whether singing or playing an instrument, as well as teaching them ways that they can express themselves.

Q: What has been your proudest achievement since graduating from high school?

A: I am very proud of my family. I have a wonderful wife and two boys. They are the start and end of my every day, and I would do anything and everything for them.

Q: Tell us about your family.

A: My wife Ashley, works in the school district with the Early Childhood department. I have two beautiful boys, Carter (13) and Sawyer (10). They thankfully take after their mother and are both very smart and musical.

Q: What advice would you give to current students in Bellevue who are trying to figure out their future paths?

A: Work hard at something you love. Be proud of what you do.

Book: I really enjoyed reading "The Demon of Unrest" by Erik Larson. It's historical, and outside my usual diet of SciFi.

Food: I love the Chinese food at Happy Buddha's in Bellevue
