Dr. Stuart Harlin, Bellevue West Class of 1979
Q: What was your most memorable experience in high school?
A: Winning the State Baseball Championship in 1978.
Q: Tell us about a teacher, coach, or staff member who significantly impacted you
A: Fred Crow, Physics. I just really liked his class.
Q: What activities, clubs, or sports were you involved in during high school, and how did they influence your path after graduation?
A: I ran Cross Country and played Baseball. I was also our Junior Class President in 1978. All helped shape who I would become.. Sports provide the discipline to persevere when adversity is encountered.
Q: What do you do for a living?
A: I am currently Professor of Surgery and Vice President of UT Health in Houston. I have been a vascular surgeon for over 30 years and have served in the Air Force. I have practiced in the Air Force, private practice, and now academic practice in Texas. I became a doctor because my parents told me I would be one. I majored in engineering in college and only did the prerequisites for medical school.
I had no idea what specialty to pursue and became enamored with vascular surgery after a rotation in it during medical school. I have been blessed to have not only a job but a calling throughout my career.
I will likely continue to practice for a few more years and look to continue my research into migrating procedures out of hospitals into outpatient settings.
Q: What has been your proudest achievement since leaving high school?
A: My family. Raising a family and trying to be the best husband and father I could be has been a constant challenge because of the unending obligations that a career in surgery provides. I have been blessed beyond belief to have such a wonderful wife and sons to call my own. They have provided me unwavering support despite my frequent absences.
Q: Tell us about your family.
A: My wife, Jill Harlin, is a physical therapist. I have two sons. William Harlin (33) is a tech consultant, and Scott Harlin (27) is an oil and gas consultant.
Q: What advice would you give to current students in Bellevue who are trying to figure out their future paths?
A: Let your heart be your guide. Find your passion and pursue it as hard as you can.
