John "Buzz" Garlock, Bellevue High Class of 1972

Q: What was your most memorable experience in high school?

A: The deep friendships I established at Bellevue High School remain my most memorable experience. I graduated in 1972, before the school became Bellevue East. Many of those friendships have endured for half a century.

Q: Tell us about a teacher, coach, or staff member who significantly impacted you

A: I had many excellent teachers at BHS. My favorite was PE teacher and baseball coach Duane Zimmer. He was quirky but always put his students' and ballplayers' interests first. I would be remiss if I did not mention my Bellevue University basketball Coach Jerry Mosser. He was an important mentor to me and played an instrumental role in my growth, as an athlete and as a person during my years at B U at BU.

Q: What activities, clubs, or sports were you involved in during high school, and how did they influence your path after graduation?

A: I played basketball and baseball at BHS. My junior year, our basketball team qualified for the state tournament, and my senior baseball team made the state tournament during Legion play. These experiences instilled discipline and teamwork that shaped my career.

Q: What do you do for a living?

A: I've been a wealth manager for 40 years and genuinely love what I do. I'm transitioning into retirement over the next two years as my son Corey takes the lead. He's extremely capable and will serve my clients well.

Q: What has been your proudest achievement since leaving high school?

A: My proudest moments are my 49-year marriage to Becky and my three children: Jessi, Andy, and Cory. I received the “Presidential Call to Service Award” from President George Bush for volunteer work at Boys Town and the NorthStar Foundation. Having played basketball and baseball at BU I was named Bellevue University's Athlete of the year in 1976 and inducted into the B U Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013. Professionally, I've been recognized as one of Barron's top financial advisors for 15 years and serve on RBC Wealth Management's Chairman's Council.

Q: Tell us about your family.

A: I've been married to Becky for 49 years. She graduated from BHS in 1975. We have three children together listed above.

Q: What advice would you give to current students in Bellevue who are trying to figure out their future paths?

A: Don't pressure yourself to have your future figured out at 18. Life changes. Give yourself permission to explore and evolve. I would also say that if you are going on to college, have a goal of learning vs. just getting good grades – challenge your professors. Finally,, seek multiple mentors as you go through life.
