Bellevue West Class of 1993 graduate Dr. Matthew Smith has taken lessons learned in Bellevue all the way to the operating room and classrooms around the world. Meet the orthopedic surgeon and professor who credits his West teachers and coaches with helping give him the confidence to succeed.

Dr. Matthew Smith, Bellevue West Class of 1993

Q: What was your most memorable experience in high school?

A: So many things come to mind, but it would have to be trying out for and getting a role in the senior play. I was never involved in drama. I took a forensics class and decided to audition. I ended up with an unexpected role that surprised the football coaches and teachers on opening night. 

Q: Tell us about a teacher, coach, or staff member who significantly impacted you

A: I had such amazing teachers, it’s hard to pick one. Oudious Lee was a tremendous coach and teacher. I still use lessons I learned from him on the field, in the weight room and in the classroom on a daily basis. He also happens to make amazing chocolate chip cookies!  

Q: What activities, clubs, or sports were you involved in during high school, and how did they influence your path after graduation?

A: I played football and was on the track team. I participated in student council and multiple clubs. The entire time at Bellevue West prepared me for my education and career. I feel incredibly fortunate to have had such a supportive environment. I remember thinking college was exactly what I expected and never felt overwhelmed. The teachers and coaches at West were a truly special group who filled me with knowledge and confidence. I am forever grateful. 

Q: What do you do for a living?

A: I am an orthopedic surgeon and professor of shoulder and elbow surgery. I am currently the Chief of Shoulder Surgery at the University of Missouri. I chose orthopedic surgery during medical school after scrubbing into a case on call. I had been involved in starting medical device companies and implant design consulting. I hope to continue to innovate and develop products that improve the lives of both patients and surgeons  

Q: What has been your proudest achievement since leaving high school?

A: Being selected to travel and teach other surgeons internationally. 

Q: Tell us about your family.

A: My wife Emily Smith (Bischoff) also graduated from Bellevue West. We have two boys—one a sophomore at Mizzou and the other a junior in high school. 

Q: What advice would you give to current students in Bellevue who are trying to figure out their future paths?

A: It’s really hard to figure out a career when you are 17– think about what you enjoy and picture the life you may want to have. Work backward from there.
