Hello - My name is Garrett Sims, and I'm the alumni director of Bellevue Public Schools and the BPS Foundation. I've lived in Bellevue since 1972 and raised my family here. All three of our sons attended BPS, and I was a classroom teacher in Bellevue for 20 years.
Several years ago...
... I accepted a position in the district as a partnerships facilitator. The general idea was to work with area businesses and nonprofits to expand local support for our schools. I was only on the job for a couple of days when I saw a performance by Bellevue alum Geary Taylor. Geary is an artist who lives in Florida and he created some art on stage at East as part of the new school year workshop for BPS teachers and staff.
Following Geary's performance, I started working on building and rebuilding relationships with alumni. There were so many examples of our incredible graduates doing amazing things in the world. It was challenging being a military community with graduates spread all over the world, but the more I dug, the more I found. Artists, business owners, actors, teachers, professional athletes, lawyers, nurses, secret service agents, politicians, authors, doctors, and thousands of men and women who served our country in the armed forces.
Wanting to share the stories I found, I started writing Alumni Spotlights. However, those took a very long time to produce, so a video series called BPS Alumni Excellence was also created. Each video plays like a slideshow set to music and features around 20 of our graduates from all around the world. All those videos are housed on our YouTube channel, which can also be found on our website.
Long story short, although I've said this many times, I sincerely mean it: I would put Bellevue's graduates up against just about any other school in the country! We have such an impressive, diverse, successful alumni nation!
Coming up soon, we have our Inaugural Bowling Party at The Alley in Bellevue - the newest bowling alley in the country! Space is limited so sign up today by going here
We also have a very special announcement coming soon about a project we've been working on for a while that we think everyone will be excited about.
In the meantime - we have a new Alumni Spotlight Series that started last month AND this month we have a special project: Bellevue Alumni Sweethearts! Featuring the love stories of a handful of couples who met in Bellevue schools, married, and are still together today!
We also launched the Bellevue Alumni Band last year (which won an award at the Arrows to Aerospace Parade) and we will soon be working to start up a Bellevue Alumni Singers group!!
If you have any questions about the Bellevue Alumni Association, please call me at (402) 293-4021 or email [email protected].
V/r,
Garrett
